“Lepoglava agate” collection

The Lepoglava agate collection consists of mineral and rock specimens collected in the Lepoglava area in Hrvatsko Zagorje, Croatia.

At the site of the former Kameni vrh quarry, Miocene andesites and pyroclastites are exposed, within which occurrences of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, have been identified, most commonly  as agate (a banded variety of chalcedony).

In addition to both rough and polished agate specimens, the collection also includes zeolites such as heulandite, mordenite, and dachiardite, as well as quartz, montmorillonite, pyrite, and two generations of opal.

The locality was first described in 1909 and is of exceptional importance as it represents the only known occurrence of gemstones in Croatia.
