Located in Novi Petruševec, on the eastern outskirts of Zagreb, the Croatian Natural History Museum’s collection storage facility has been in operation since 2020. Covering approximately 2,000 square metres, it houses more than 1.34 million museum specimens and objects.
The facility has been designed in accordance with contemporary museum standards and tailored to the preservation requirements of the Museum’s diverse and sensitive collections. Environmental conditions, including relative humidity, temperature, lighting, and protection from dust and pests, are carefully controlled to ensure the long-term conservation of the collections.
Spread across two floors and 26 rooms, the facility primarily serves as collection storage space, but also includes offices for curators, a quarantine area for newly acquired material, cold-storage rooms for sensitive specimens, a conservation and preparation workshop, and a DNA laboratory. The storage facility also contains a dedicated room for the safe storage of radioactive minerals and chemical substances.
The Novi Petruševec storage facility is the largest specialised museum storage centre in Croatia. It is equipped with compact archival shelving systems, specimen drawers, entomological cabinets, archival boxes, and other professional storage materials necessary for the secure relocation, organisation, preservation, and management of museum collections and inventory.
