Around 1.5 million specimens are preserved in the zoological, botanical, geological and mineralogical collections of the Museum, supported by a long tradition of scientific research into natural heritage.

Departments and Services
Natural History Departments
The Zoology, Geology and Palaeontology, Mineralogy and Petrography, Botany, and Conservation and Preparation Departments form the professional basis of museum work.
General Affairs Department
The Department carries out administrative, legal, financial, accounting, sales, technical and support tasks for the Museum.
Joint Services Department
The Department carries out tasks common to all natural history departments, including archival materials, publishing and promotional activities, the museum journal, and educational programmes.
History
History of the Croatian Natural History Museum and Amadeo Palace
The Historic Palace
The Croatian Natural History Museum is housed in a historic noble palace on the ramparts of Zagreb's Upper Town. Between 1797 and 1834, Zagreb's first public theatre – the Amadeo Theatre, named after Count Anton Amadeo de Varkonyi – operated in this building.
Origins of the Collections
The origins of today's natural history collections date back to the Croatian National Revival, when the National Museum was founded in 1846 in Opatička Street. The collections gradually expanded through the work of distinguished naturalists and the first museum experts, such as Spiridion Brusina, Gjuro Pilar, and Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger.
Museum Work Today
The Museum collects, preserves, researches, and presents Croatia's natural heritage. Today its collections contain more than 2 million specimens of minerals, rocks, fossils, plants, and animals.
Professional activities are carried out through specialised departments: Geology and Palaeontology, Zoology, Mineralogy and Petrography, Botany, and Conservation and Preparation.
Journal and Programme
The journal Natura Croatica has been published since 1992. Since 2000, the summer programme Scena Amadeo has been held in the Museum courtyard.

Parent Institution Activity
Status as First-Level Parent Museum
Pursuant to the Museums Act and the Ordinance on methods and criteria for integration into the Museum System of the Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Natural History Museum is the parent institution for natural history museums in Croatia.
The Museum Director, Prof. dr. sc. Tatjana Vlahović, is a member of the Museum System Council, while Dr. sc. Irena Grbac, Museum Adviser, is the coordinator of the first-level parent museum.
