Mobility Week — Educational Trips

Dear nature lovers,

On the occasion of European Mobility Week and the International Year of Caves and Karst, the Croatian Natural History Museum is organizing educational hiking trips to the karst areas of Medvednica from 16 to 22 September 2021.

All trips are accessed and left by regular city public transport. The trips are intended for everyone who is physically able to take part in several hours of light hiking. In case of a rainy weather forecast, the trips will be cancelled.

Registrations for the trips must be sent no later than one day before the start of the trip to: damir.lackovic@hpm.hr. The maximum number of participants is 20.

16, 17, and 22 September 2021:

Educational Trip: Gornji Stenjevec – Veternica Cave

Under the guidance of geology and biology curators, participants will study rocks, minerals, fossils, karst phenomena, and the plant and animal world along the hiking trail and in the tourist section of Veternica Cave.

The trip starts in Gornji Stenjevec, at the turnaround point/final stop of city bus line 124, Črnomerec – Gornji Stenjevec, at 4:30 p.m. The bus departs from Črnomerec at 4:05 p.m.

Participants should bring suitable footwear, such as hiking boots or outdoor trainers, and layered clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. It is also recommended to bring rainwear and an umbrella.

The planned duration of the trip is from 4:30 p.m. to around 8:00 p.m. Return is by bus from Gornji Stenjevec to Črnomerec.

Registration is possible no later than one day before the start of the trip by email: damir.lackovic@hpm.hr. The maximum number of participants is 20.

  • Students and pensioners: HRK 30.00

18 September 2021:

Karst Phenomena of Western Medvednica: Gornje Vrapče – Ponikve – Veternica Cave – Gornji Stenjevec

Under the guidance of geology and biology curators, participants will study rocks, minerals, fossils, karst phenomena, and the plant and animal world along the hiking trail and in the tourist section of Veternica Cave.

The trip starts in Gornje Vrapče, at the penultimate stop of city bus line 125, Črnomerec – Gornje Vrapče, at 9:30 a.m., or upon the arrival of the bus departing from Črnomerec at 9:00 a.m.

The planned duration of the trip is from 9:00 a.m. to around 4:00 p.m., or 5:00 p.m. Return is by bus from Gornji Stenjevec to Črnomerec.

Participants should bring suitable footwear, such as hiking boots or outdoor trainers, and layered clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. It is also recommended to bring rainwear and an umbrella.

A half-hour lunch break in nature is planned, so participants should bring their own food and water.

20 and 21 September 2021:

Sljeme – Horvatove Stube – Hunjka

Under the guidance of geology and biology curators, participants will study the metamorphic and igneous rocks of the upper part of Medvednica, the karst phenomena of Horvatove stube, including karren, caves, and pits, as well as the plant and animal world along the hiking trail.

The trip starts at Mihaljevac, at the departure point of city bus line 140, Mihaljevac – Sljeme, at 4:30 p.m. The bus departs at 4:35 p.m.

The planned return is by bus from Hunjka at 7:35 p.m., with arrival at Mihaljevac around 8:30 p.m.

Participants should bring suitable footwear, such as hiking boots or outdoor trainers, and layered clothing appropriate for the weather forecast. It is also recommended to bring rainwear and an umbrella.
