What Do the Photographs Reveal?

The worlds of insects and minerals display an extraordinary diversity of colours, patterns, and textures. This exhibition presents a selection of photographic compositions that bring together beetles from the Mikšić Beetle Collection and minerals from the mineralogical and petrological collections of the Croatian Natural History Museum.

The subjects were carefully chosen to highlight similarities in colour, pattern, texture, and form between living organisms and geological specimens. In some cases, beetles blend so perfectly with the minerals beneath them that they are difficult to detect at first glance. In others, the connection is revealed through surface structures, body shapes, or a combination of several visual characteristics.

The exhibition uncovers remarkable parallels between the living and non-living worlds, inviting visitors to explore the fascinating relationships between biology, geology, and visual perception. We hope that visitors will enjoy discovering these unexpected connections as much as the authors enjoyed creating them.
