Micro Worlds – Nature Revealed Through the Lens of the Electron Microscope

The Croatian Natural History Museum presents an exhibition that reveals the hidden
micro-universe of nature through images obtained using a scanning electron microscope.

Opening: 23 December 2025, 6:00 PM
23 December 2025 – 23 April 2026
Exhibition annex, level -2

About the Exhibition

“Micro Worlds” reveals the hidden micro-universe of nature through
images obtained using a scanning electron microscope, known as SEM.

Visitors are introduced to minerals, rocks, plants, animals, and fossils at scales
invisible to the naked eye.

The core of the exhibition consists of large-format SEM images revealing microstructures
and details of natural materials, accompanied by original specimens, models, photographs,
and holograms.

Context and Significance

Museum modernization

The exhibition is part of a broader modernization project of the Museum and
the development of research laboratories, including SEM, DNA, and natural
science laboratories.

Investment

A total of €573,000 was invested, including €360,000 for the electron microscope.

Concept

The exhibition presents 20 examples of natural heritage, including minerals, rocks,
fossils, plants, and animals, combining science, technology, and visual aesthetics.

Electron microscopy reveals structures that explain the formation of minerals,
organism morphology, and evolutionary traces of life.

Scientific Importance

Microscopy bridges the macro and micro world

  • In geology, it reveals rock structure and formation processes.
  • In biology, it shows functional organism morphology.
  • In paleontology, it uncovers details of extinct species.
