Exhibition “From the Legacy of Gjuro Pilar”
Opening: Thursday, 23 May 2019 at 1:00 PM
To mark the 125th anniversary of the death of Gjuro Pilar, his great-grandson Božidar Jančiković donated a valuable part of the family estate to the Croatian Natural History Museum and the Museum of Brodsko Posavlje. The collection includes original personal and professional documents that provide a unique insight into the life and work of one of the founders of Croatian geology.
Among the exhibited items are Pilar’s baptism certificate, secondary school records, diplomas from the University of Brussels, the manuscript of Flora fossilis Susedana, official correspondence related to his museum and academic work, as well as numerous personal documents. Particularly valuable are private letters exchanged with family members, especially those sent to his brother Martin Pilar, together with portraits of Klementina Pilar and Martin Pilar.
The exhibition takes visitors through different stages of Pilar’s life—from his childhood, education, and student years in Brussels to his distinguished career as a university professor, scientist, and museum professional, during which he achieved significant recognition within Croatia’s scientific and cultural communities.
The exhibition remains open until 20 August 2019.
