GEA 2019 – BLACK & WHITE GEA Photography Exhibition by Members and Friends of the Croatian Geological Society
Opening: 18 September 2019 at 1:00 PM Venue: Croatian Natural History Museum, Zagreb
The photography exhibition GEA, featuring works by members and friends of the Croatian Geological Society, is being held for the eighth consecutive year. This year’s edition, titled “BLACK & WHITE GEA,” presents a unique perspective on natural phenomena, particularly geological features, through the timeless medium of black-and-white photography.
Over the years, GEA has become a traditional annual event of the Croatian Geological Society while maintaining its competitive character. From a large number of photographs submitted to the invitation-only competition, an expert jury selected the 40 most outstanding works for exhibition.
To encourage visitors to focus solely on the photographs themselves, the names of the authors are not displayed. Each photograph is identified only by its title and number, and visitors are invited to vote for the three images they find most compelling.
The exhibition is traditionally hosted by institutions connected with geology. Previous editions have been presented at INA and the Croatian Geological Survey. Following its presentation at the Croatian Natural History Museum, the exhibition will also be shown at the Department of Geology of the Faculty of Science and at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering.
The photographs receiving the highest number of public votes will be announced at the Croatian Geological Society’s annual assembly in December 2019. As part of the event, an auction of the exhibited photographs will be held, with all proceeds donated to charitable causes, continuing a long-standing tradition of humanitarian support.
The theme of this year’s exhibition, “BLACK & WHITE GEA,” highlights the beauty of geological structures, landscapes, and natural phenomena through the striking visual language of monochrome photography.
The organizers hope that the exhibition will appeal not only to geologists and earth-science professionals but also to a broad audience of museum visitors. Above all, it aims to promote public interest in geology, one of the key missions shared by the Croatian Geological Society and the Croatian Natural History Museum.
