About the exhibition

The exhibition “Behind the Scenes – the New Permanent Display of the Croatian Natural History Museum”
presents years of work on the creation of the museum’s new permanent display
through 20 panels with solar lighting.

Visitors have the opportunity to look behind the scenes of museum work and learn
about the processes behind the creation of a contemporary natural history display —
from collecting and selecting objects, preparing specimens and processing geological
material, to preparing exhibits for display.

Behind the scenes of museum work

The exhibition answers a number of interesting questions about the creation of
museum collections, the processing of objects and the preparation of exhibits for
the new permanent display.

Museum holdings
How do objects enter the museum holdings?
Natural history collections
How are natural history collections created?
Preparators
What does a museum preparator do?
Geological samples
How are geological samples millions of years old processed?
Valuable objects
Which of the most valuable objects were prepared for the new permanent display?

The work of experts

Through photographs and documentation, the exhibition presents the everyday work
of experts involved in creating the new Croatian Natural History Museum.

From collection to exhibition

The exhibition introduces visitors to the complex professional processes that
precede the public presentation of museum objects — from scientific processing
and conservation of material to its interpretation in the new permanent display.

The new permanent display

The new display is based on a comprehensive interpretation of natural history
heritage through selected objects from the mineralogical-petrographic,
geological-paleontological, zoological and botanical collections.

In addition to original objects, visitors will encounter replicas, models and
multimedia content that help explain the diversity of the living and non-living world.

The central question of the display

“What is life and how did it originate?”

The path towards the new museum

This photo-documentary exhibition is the third in the series “Towards the New CNHM”,
which follows the renovation and development of the Croatian Natural History Museum.

The project includes the renovation of the historic Amadeo Palace in Zagreb’s
Upper Town, as well as the development of new museum facilities, laboratories,
educational programmes and a contemporary permanent display that will bring
natural history heritage closer to a wider public.
