Workshop: Make a Bird Feeder

To help birds living in urban areas during the winter months, when low temperatures and food shortages make survival more difficult, we will make a simple bird feeder.

The feeder can be placed in a garden or on a balcony, but make sure it is positioned high enough to protect visiting birds from predators.

Materials needed:

  • 500 g lard
  • string
  • wire
  • a cork stopper
  • a cup
  • 500 g mixed seeds (sunflower, flax, pumpkin, barley, wheat)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the lard slowly in a pan over low heat.
  2. Add the seeds to the melted lard and mix thoroughly.
  3. Pour the mixture into a cup and place a piece of cork with a wire threaded through it at the bottom.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool and harden completely.
  5. Remove the feeder from the cup, attach a string to the wire, and hang it from a tree or another suitable location.
