WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN: The Structure of the Earth
The Earth’s interior is divided into three main layers: the core, the mantle, and the crust, the layer on which we live. Through this fun and educational activity, learn about the structure of our planet and create your own Earth model.
MATERIALS:
- Black, green, blue, orange, red, and yellow coloured paper or cardstock
- White paper
- Black marker
- Scissors
- Compass
- Protractor
- Drawing pin
- Cork stopper or a small piece of Styrofoam
- Glue
INSTRUCTIONS:
Using a compass, draw circles on coloured paper with the following diameters:
- Black and blue paper: 20 cm
- Red paper: 19 cm
- Orange paper: 9 cm
- Yellow paper: 5 cm
Cut out continent shapes from the green paper. Remove one quarter of the blue circle and glue the continents onto the remaining section.
Layer the circles in the following order: black, red, orange, and yellow, making sure they are centred.
Label the layers with a marker:
- INNER CORE on the yellow circle
- OUTER CORE on the orange circle
- MANTLE on the red circle
Write CRUST on a small piece of white paper and glue it onto the black circle. If you wish, you can also write the thickness of each Earth layer on the reverse side.
Push a drawing pin through the centre of the model and secure it on the back with a cork stopper or a small piece of Styrofoam. By rotating the upper section, you can explore the internal structure of our planet.
