Whale bones found in the Adriatic
That it is always worthwhile to spend time at sea beneath the surface was discovered these days by the boys Patrik and Kristijan.
In the underwater area of the small island of Pržnjak near Korčula, they found some large, smelly bones. What delights the boys interests scientists and attracts maritime journalists.
A box of bones arrived at the Croatian Natural History Museum team, who praised the enthusiasm and sharp eyes of the young divers.
“They made an effort, they brought up bones from the entire area around the islet, collected them and packed them, and here we brought those bones … and concluded that they belong to Cuvier’s beaked whale”, says Dr. Draško Holcer from the Croatian Natural History Museum.
The bones are large, as they should be for a whale 5 meters long that also lives in the southern Adriatic, at great depths. Its major enemies are noise and seismic research. It moves in small groups and is encountered very rarely.
The bones of Cuvier’s beaked whale belong to an already dead individual found in December near Orebić.
In a few months, the sea did its work, and scientists will boil the fat out of the found bones and prepare them to become part of the collection of the Croatian Natural History Museum.
