Project presentation – Revitalization of Museums and Museum Heritage at Dverce Palace

A presentation of the project titled Revitalization of Museums and Museum Heritage was held at Dverce Palace. The project was initiated by the Croatian Natural History Museum in cooperation with the Ethnographic Museum, the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum and the Museum of Arts and Crafts, under the patronage of the City of Zagreb, namely the City Office for Education, Culture and Sports and the City Office for European Union Programs and Projects.

Since the City of Zagreb has been making excellent use of its tourism potential in recent years, the need was recognized to revitalize Zagreb’s museums, both architecturally and museologically, in order to make full use of the potential they offer.

As a result, the Croatian Natural History Museum was the first to launch a project to secure funds for renovation, and the other three museums joined the initiative.

Dr. Iva Mihoci, President of the Expert Council of the Croatian Natural History Museum, emphasized that they had excellent cooperation with the City and institutions during the preliminary project activities, and that they continue to cooperate very successfully during the implementation of the project.

After the renovation, the Croatian Natural History Museum will have a more representative and modern new permanent exhibition, five laboratories, a multimedia hall and a souvenir shop. Funds from European Union funds have already been secured for the project documentation, while the application documentation for the works is being prepared.

The renovation project of the Ethnographic Museum was presented by the museum director Goranka Horjan, who explained that it includes the renovation of the museum façade, the arrangement of the neglected courtyard and changes to the permanent exhibition.

She also noted that the museum was the first in Croatia to become a pet-friendly institution, and that it is now introducing a virtual tour, setting another precedent.

The Nikola Tesla Technical Museum and the Museum of Arts and Crafts are planning major architectural and construction interventions.

The director of the Technical Museum, Markita Franulić, explained that they plan a complete renovation of Building B and the introduction of numerous new contents, while Miroslav Gašparović, director of the Museum of Arts and Crafts, emphasized the renovation of the Babočaj Gvozdanović Palace, which will become accessible to citizens after twenty years of being closed to the public.

Heads of city offices Ivica Lovrić and Jelena Ricov expressed satisfaction with the cooperation so far and announced new steps in the continuation of the cooperation, such as putting industrial buildings in the suburbs of Zagreb into use for the storage and safekeeping of museum exhibits and materials, which will greatly facilitate the work of these institutions.
