New Cave Springtail Species Discovered in the Underground World of the Dinaric Karst
Research conducted by the Croatian Natural History Museum in Montenegro has resulted in the discovery of new species to science and new insights into the underground biodiversity of the Dinaric Karst. The discovery of new springtail species represents an important scientific achievement resulting from biodiversity research on cave-dwelling springtails carried out in Montenegro. The project was conducted by the Croatian Natural History Museum with support from The Linnean Society of London, one of the world’s most prestigious natural history societies, through the Percy Sladen Memorial Fund programme.
The project was led by Dr Marko Lukić, curator at the Zoological Department of the Croatian Natural History Museum, whose scientific work focuses on the study of springtails and the underground biodiversity of the Dinaric Karst.
Exploring the hidden world beneath the surface
During the research, numerous caves in Montenegro were visited, and under demanding field conditions, specimens of cave-dwelling springtails belonging to the genus Verhoeffiella were collected. Among these specimens, new species to science were discovered.
The research also provided new insights into the distribution of cave springtails and resulted in valuable findings of other groups of cave-dwelling invertebrates, whose further scientific analysis is yet to be completed.
Small organisms of great importance
Springtails (Latin Collembola) are a group of tiny arthropods that remain largely unknown to the general public. They inhabit almost all terrestrial environments, including caves.
Despite their small size, springtails play an important role in ecosystem functioning due to their abundance and ecological importance. Their remarkable adaptations to life in caves make them valuable subjects for studying evolutionary processes.
The Dinaric Karst is one of the world’s most important regions of underground biodiversity, yet cave springtails remain insufficiently studied. As a result, scientific research continues to reveal new species, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on Earth.
From field research to scientific description
Following this discovery, the collected specimens will undergo detailed laboratory analysis, be deposited in the museum collection, and serve as the basis for scientific publications in which the new species will be formally described.
The results will advance knowledge of the distribution and evolution of subterranean organisms and further confirm the international importance of biodiversity research in the Dinaric Karst.
