Mobility Week – educational excursions
Dear nature lovers,
On the occasion of European Mobility Week and the International Year of Caves and Karst, the Croatian Natural History Museum is organising educational hiking excursions to the karst areas of Medvednica from 16 to 22 September 2021.
All excursions are reached and left by regular city public transport. The excursions are intended for everyone who is physically ready for several hours of light hiking. In case of a rainy weather forecast, the excursions will be cancelled.
Applications for the excursions must be sent no later than one day before the start of the excursion to: damir.lackovic@hpm.hr. The maximum number of participants is 20.
16, 17 and 22 September 2021
Educational excursion G. Stenjevec – Veternica Cave
Under the guidance of geology and biology curators, participants will study rocks, minerals, fossils, karst phenomena, and plant and animal life directly along the hiking trail and in the tourist section of Veternica Cave.
The excursion begins at the turnaround, the last stop of city bus line 124, Črnomerec – G. Stenjevec, in G. Stenjevec, at 16:30. The bus departs from Črnomerec at 16:05.
For the excursion, it is necessary to bring suitable footwear, hiking boots or outdoor trainers, and layered clothing adapted to the weather forecast. It is also recommended to bring clothing in case of rain and an umbrella.
The planned duration of the excursion is from 16:30 to around 20:00. Return is by bus from G. Stenjevec to Črnomerec.

Karst phenomena of western Medvednica, G. Vrapče – Ponikve – Veternica Cave – G. Stenjevec
Under the guidance of geology and biology curators, participants will study rocks, minerals, fossils, karst phenomena, and plant and animal life directly along the hiking trail and in the tourist section of Veternica Cave.
The excursion begins in G. Vrapče, at the penultimate stop of city bus line 125, Črnomerec – G. Vrapče, at 9:30, or upon arrival of the bus that departs from Črnomerec at 9:00.
The planned duration of the excursion is from 9:00 to around 16:00 or 17:00. Return is by bus from G. Stenjevec to Črnomerec.
For the excursion, it is necessary to bring suitable footwear, hiking boots or outdoor trainers, and layered clothing adapted to the weather forecast. It is also recommended to bring clothing in case of rain and an umbrella.
A half-hour lunch break in nature is planned, so participants should bring their own food and water.

Sljeme – Horvat’s Steps – Hunjka
Under the guidance of geology and biology curators, participants will study the metamorphic and igneous rocks of the summit area of Medvednica, the karst phenomena of Horvat’s Steps, karren, caves and pits, as well as plant and animal life directly along the hiking trail.
The excursion begins at Mihaljevac, at the departure point of city bus line 140, Mihaljevac – Sljeme, at 16:30. The bus departs at 16:35.
The planned return by bus is at 19:35 from Hunjka, with arrival at Mihaljevac around 20:30.
For the excursion, it is necessary to bring suitable footwear, hiking boots or outdoor trainers, and layered clothing adapted to the weather forecast. It is also recommended to bring clothing in case of rain and an umbrella.
