Minerals from the Trepča / Stari Trg Mine – A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Perspective

📅 March 26 (Thursday), 2026
🕕 6:00 PM
📍 MMD, Croatian Natural History Museum
🎤 Speaker: Mr. Sc. Snježana Mikulčić Pavlaković

The Trepča / Stari Trg mine is one of the most famous and mineralogically richest ore deposits in Europe. Its exceptional paragenesis has fascinated scientists and collectors for decades. Representative specimens of these minerals are preserved in the collections of the Croatian Natural History Museum, where their true complexity and beauty are fully revealed only at the microscopic scale.

In this lecture, Mr. Sc. Snježana Mikulčić Pavlaković will present minerals from the Trepča / Stari Trg mine as seen through the “eyes” of a scanning electron microscope (SEM). This method provides insight into extremely fine morphological details, crystal growth patterns, oriented intergrowths, and traces of the physicochemical conditions under which the minerals formed.

Special emphasis will be placed on sulfide minerals such as galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and arsenopyrite, as well as their scientific and conservation significance.

The lecture is part of the accompanying discursive program for the exhibition “Microworlds – Nature Revealed Through the Lens of the Electron Microscope.”
