International Museum Day

Since 1977, when the International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day on 18 May, numerous museums around the world have opened their doors wide to visitors on that day and presented them with diverse programmes.

We were looking forward to that day this year as well; however, like most Zagreb museums located in the city centre, we were struck by a natural disaster that, in ten seconds, destroyed part of our museum material and damaged the building in which our Museum has been housed since the end of the 19th century.

For us, this is the saddest Museum Day, because the doors of the Museum will remain closed to our loyal visitors.

Nevertheless, we are confident that the previously launched project “Culture, Science and Education in the Function of Economic Development – the new CNHM” will be successfully completed in a few years, and that our Museum will shine with a new splendour.

Until then, we will present our valuable museum material and numerous interesting facts related to it on our website and social media pages through the Natural History Online programme.
