International Limnogeological Conference Lake-Basin-Evolution

An international scientific conference on lakes begins in Zagreb on Friday.

The Croatian Geological Society, at the initiative of the Regional Committee on Mediterranean Neogene Stratigraphy (RCMNS), is organizing an international limnogeological conference entitled "Lake – Basin – Evolution" – Stratigraphy, Geodynamics, Climate, and Diversity of Past and Recent Lacustrine Systems, from 20 to 24 May 2016 in Zagreb.

The conference, focusing on stratigraphic correlation, the dynamics of depositional processes, and the development of biological diversity in lake basins, promotes limnogeology as a modern natural science discipline that integrates the expertise of geological and biological sciences.

Alongside the Croatian Geological Society, a large number of Croatian and international scientific institutions are participating as partners and supporters of this important conference – the University of Zagreb, the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, the Faculty of Science, the Croatian Natural History Museum, the Natural History Museum Vienna, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, INA – Industrija nafte, the Croatian Geological Survey, the International Association of Sedimentologists, and the International Union of Geological Sciences.

The conference will be held at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, and 70 eminent international and Croatian experts from a range of disciplines related to the study of lake basins will participate, including stratigraphers, sedimentologists, structural geologists, palaeontologists, biologists, and geochemists.

The programme includes lectures and poster presentations, and two excursions will also be organized: a one-day excursion to Neogene lake deposits in the Zagreb area, and a three-day excursion through past and present freshwater lake environments, from 18 Ma to the present, where limnogeological research is ongoing, including Plitvice Lakes and Lake Vrana in Dalmatia, as well as the Neogene lake basins of the Dinarides in southern Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The ceremonial opening of the conference will take place on Friday, 20 May 2016 at 6:00 p.m. at the Croatian Natural History Museum, where, along with greetings from sponsor representatives, a plenary lecture by Mathias Harzhauser from Austria will be held on the history of the development of freshwater lake systems in Europe.
