His Majesty – The Diamond

Why has the diamond been considered the king of all gemstones for centuries? How does it form more than 150 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, why is it the hardest natural material, and how is it possible that diamonds can now also be created in laboratories?
During the lecture, we will explore fascinating insights into the world of diamonds – from their formation deep within the Earth, through historic gems such as the Koh-i-Noor, the Hope Diamond, and the Cullinan, to the latest scientific discoveries about synthetic diamonds and modern methods of diamond identification.
We will learn how the value of a diamond is determined, what makes it rare, and why certain specimens reach prices of several million dollars.
🎬 19:00 – Film screening: “Blood Diamond” (2006)
Following the lecture, which reveals the natural and scientific side of diamonds, the film screening offers a look into their more complex social history – exploring how the journey of a gemstone can be connected with human lives, trade, and ethical questions.
The program brings together geology, mineralogy, history, technology, and cinema, offering a comprehensive view of the diamond – from its formation deep within the Earth to its place in human culture.
