From Museum to Nature – Spring Natural History Camp in the Vis Archipelago Geopark

The Croatian Natural History Museum invites nature enthusiasts of all ages to join the five-day educational programme “From Museum to Nature”, taking place in the Vis Archipelago Geopark.

The programme is open to participants of all ages. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required and places are limited.

About the Programme

This educational field trip includes daily guided hikes along the island’s trails and a full-day boat excursion to Biševo Island.

Participants will explore the geological history, natural heritage, and biodiversity of the Vis Archipelago while learning directly in the field through expert-led tours and outdoor activities.

What Will You Discover?

Participants will explore:

  • fossilized algal meadows dating back to the age of dinosaurs
  • Ice Age wind-blown sand deposits
  • fossil oysters, foraminifera, and other ancient marine remains
  • volcanic and evaporite rocks
  • karst formations and coastal springs
  • caves and former mining sites
  • the geological and biological diversity of Vis and Biševo Islands

Programme Highlights

📅 30 March (Monday)
Arrival on Vis and exploration of the Vis–Rukavac Geotrail.

📅 31 March (Tuesday)
Hiking tour from Komiža to Perjaška and Perna bays, followed by a visit to the Komiža Geotrail.

📅 1 April (Wednesday)
Full-day boat excursion to Biševo Island and guided tour of the Biševo Geotrail.

📅 2 April (Thursday)
Visit to a cave near Komiža, a silica sand mine, and fossil-rich limestone sites near Srebarna Bay.

📅 3 April (Friday)
Morning walk to Stiniva Bay before departure by ferry.

The programme may be adjusted depending on weather conditions and organisational requirements.

Costs

✅ Expert guidance provided by Croatian Natural History Museum staff is free of charge.

💶 Boat transport Vis – Biševo – Vis: approximately €15–25.

Participants are responsible for arranging:

  • transportation to and from Vis Island
  • local transportation on the island
  • accommodation (4 nights)
  • meals and drinks throughout the programme

What to Bring

Participants should bring:

  • suitable hiking footwear
  • weather-appropriate clothing
  • rain protection
  • sun protection (hat and sunscreen)
  • a headlamp for cave and mine visits
  • sufficient drinking water

About “From Museum to Nature”

Running since 2008, “From Museum to Nature” is an educational programme designed to introduce visitors to natural heritage through direct experiences in the field.

Participants learn about rocks, minerals, fossils, plants, fungi, and animals while developing a deeper understanding of nature conservation and environmental protection.

The programme is led by curators, educators, and guides from the Croatian Natural History Museum, in collaboration with experts from the Croatian Sports Museum and the University Mountaineering Society Velebit.
