Join us for a unique moment that will go down in the history of astronomy – a live broadcast of the first light from the most powerful telescope of today, from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. The Croatian Natural History Museum is proudly among many institutions worldwide simultaneously streaming this spectacular event in its state-of-the-art multimedia hall.
📸 What can we expect?
The first public release of images from the new observatory located high in the Chilean Andes at 2,672 meters above sea level. The telescope is equipped with the world’s largest digital astronomical camera—an incredible 3,200 megapixels in resolution, weighing almost 3 tons! In just a few nights it will be able to image the entire sky, and over 10 years of operation it will produce the largest time-lapse of the Universe ever created.
🔭 Why is this important?
The Rubin Observatory is designed to uncover the secrets of the Universe—from dark matter and dark energy to tracking millions of asteroids and cataloguing billions of stars and galaxies. Its work may also play a key role in protecting our planet from potentially hazardous space objects.
🌠 Who was Vera C. Rubin?
The observatory is named after the legendary American astronomer whose research confirmed the existence of dark matter, and who strongly advocated for gender equality in science. Her scientific legacy continues through this remarkable project.
🎫 Admission is free, but seating is limited—arrive early to secure your place under the stars!
