DNA, Genes and Chromosomes – Educational Workshop Series for Schools

DNA, Genes and Chromosomes – Educational Workshop Series for Schools

Registration is available exclusively for schools, and only one workshop may be booked per time slot.

The programme consists of four educational workshops focused on DNA and genetics, adapted to different age groups and levels of prior knowledge. Workshops take place at the Croatian Natural History Museum and make use of the newly equipped DNA laboratory, multimedia exhibits, and interactive museum displays.

The programme aims to introduce students to DNA, genes, chromosomes, and inheritance through multimedia presentations, educational games, laboratory demonstrations, simple experiments, and simulations of scientific research.

The workshops are led by Dr Martina Podnar Lešić, Senior Curator and Research Associate with extensive experience in genetics and molecular biology, together with museum educator Dr Renata Brezinščak.

Workshop 1: DNA Detective – DNA Barcoding in Wildlife Forensics

Participants learn about DNA barcoding, a method used to identify animal species based on unique DNA sequences. Through a simulated forensic investigation, they analyse traditional medicinal products and determine whether they contain material from protected animal species.

The workshop includes:

  • animated presentation about DNA
  • DNA extraction
  • PCR simulation
  • gene database searches
  • forensic case investigation
  • educational puzzles and activities

Age group: Grade 8 students, first-year secondary school students, and final-year students

Workshop 2: Let’s Play with DNA – The Secret Code of All Living Things

Designed for younger students, this workshop introduces the basics of genetics through play and creative activities. Participants learn what DNA is, where it is found, and what it does, then create their own DNA bracelets based on real animal DNA sequences.

The workshop includes:

  • animated presentation
  • DNA bracelet making
  • DNA colouring activities
  • crosswords
  • memory games
  • educational activities

Age group: Primary school students (lower grades and Grades 5–7)

Workshop 3: The DNA Molecule

Participants explore the structure and function of DNA and learn how scientists study this remarkable molecule.

The workshop includes:

  • multimedia presentation
  • introduction to the “Central Dogma” exhibit
  • DNA extraction from a banana
  • electrophoresis demonstration
  • DNA-themed board games
  • puzzles and DNA models
  • DNA bracelet making

Age group: Upper primary school and secondary school students

Workshop 4: Genetics

Through a variety of educational games and hands-on activities, participants learn the basic principles of genetics and inheritance.

Activities include:

  • DNA Path game
  • Mutation game
  • Human karyotype assembly
  • DNA forensic challenges
  • Eye-colour inheritance activities
  • Trait inheritance games
  • “Interesting Genes” museum treasure hunt

Age group: Grade 8 students, first-year secondary school students, and final-year students

Venue: Croatian Natural History Museum, Zagreb
Maximum number of participants: 25 per workshop
Schedule: By arrangement with the workshop leader
