Mineral holotype and cotype collection
The Mineral Holotype and Cotype Collection comprises holotypes of newly described mineral species, as well as original specimens on which new crystal twinning laws for individual minerals and correctly oriented crystal intergrowths of two mineral species (cotypes) were first identified.
Among the holotypes, two phosphate minerals are of particular significance: barićite, named in honour of the distinguished Croatian mineralogist Professor Ljudevit Barić, the long-serving Director of the former Mineralogical-Petrographical Museum (now the Mineralogical-Petrographical Department of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb), and marićite, named after the renowned Croatian petrologist and academician Luka Marić.
The Mineral Holotype and Cotype Collection was established as the result of many years of research by Croatian mineralogists on new mineral species and previously unknown characteristics of already known minerals. The original specimens on which these investigations were based (holotypes and cotypes) were entrusted to the Mineralogical-Petrographical Department of the Croatian Natural History Museum in Zagreb for permanent preservation.
