Miocene and Pliocene freshwater molluscs
The Miocene and Pliocene freshwater molluscs collection is a very rich collection and one of the most valuable geological and palaeontological collections, whose material is divided into several subcollections. One of the subcollections is the unique collection of molluscs gathered and studied by Prof. Spiridion Brusina, titled “S. Brusina: Materials for the Neogene malacological fauna of Dalmatia-Croatia-Slavonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, etc.” This mollusc collection is inventory-wise divided into four parts: (A) Iconographia molluscorum fossilium, (B) Materials for the Neogene malacological fauna, (C) Fossil freshwater molluscs and other collections of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia, and (D) Neogene malacological fauna of Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia and Germany. In terms of number of items, the Miocene and Pliocene freshwater molluscs collection is the largest collection of the Geological and Palaeontological Department, containing over 30,000 specimens, of which more than 20,000 fossils grouped into nearly 2,500 inventory units belong to Prof. Spiridion Brusina’s collection. The collection contains numerous fossil mollusc faunas (bivalves and gastropods) from the Miocene and Pliocene collected from various localities in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Austria and Germany. The collection also includes a large number of holotypes.
