The exhibition “Fossils Through Time and Artistic Impression” is the result of ten years of exceptionally successful collaboration between the Croatian Natural History Museum and the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb. The programme, entitled “The Magical World of Fossils,” was held annually in May to mark International Museum Day.
The steadily increasing number of students participating in the workshops, along with the involvement of new school departments, demonstrates the strong interest in collaborating with museum curators and working with museum collections. The artworks created during these workshops show that fossils can be viewed from an entirely different perspective – as a source of inspiration and a catalyst for artistic expression.
Each fossil is unique and irreplaceable, not only because of its external form but also due to its intricate internal structures, which often resemble unexplored labyrinths when viewed in cross-section. At the same time, every fossil offers countless possibilities for interpretation and personal artistic expression.
The exhibition features a remarkable selection of graphic artworks, striking sculptures, creatively designed jewellery, unique ceramic pieces, original textile designs, and outstanding photographs. All works were professionally reviewed and evaluated by the mentors of the various departments of the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb.
The quality and originality of these student works inspired the creation of this exhibition, marking a decade of successful collaboration. It presents selected fossils from the rich geological and paleontological collections of the Croatian Natural History Museum alongside student artworks inspired by these valuable natural heritage specimens.
