Everything You Wanted to Know About Carnivorous Plants

From 17:00 to 18:00, botanist Dr. Dubravka Sandev from the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science, an excellent expert on these plants, will be a guest at our museum.

This is an opportunity to find out first-hand everything you are interested in about them: where they grow, why they are called that, what and how they feed on, whether and where they can be obtained, how to grow them properly at home, and more.

We believe there are many questions, so come and ask.

In addition to the interesting information you will learn, you will also see a demonstration of their feeding.

Exhibitions:

Towards the New Croatian Natural History Museum

We are presenting a smaller part of the previously unexhibited holdings of the future new permanent display of the Croatian Natural History Museum, as well as the entire project of the new museum Culture, Science and Education in the Function of Economic Development – the New HPM.

Soon, citizens and visitors of the City of Zagreb will have the same opportunity as in other EU countries to enjoy an outstanding museum: a renovated and revitalized space, a new permanent display, interactive presentations and a whole range of new content, as well as an Open-Air Museum located in the Tuškanac forest park.

Coral Retrieved from the Sea

The diversity of fossil and recent corals, their structure, impressive building ability and luxurious beauty inspired us to present them to visitors through various natural history and other aspects, starting from their first appearance in the distant geological past, through their mineralogical composition, structure and way of life of today’s corals, all the way to the use of coral in making attractive and valuable jewellery.

In this way, alongside its primary natural history attribute, this exhibition has also been given an artistic one, placing it among the exhibitions of the new wave of the Croatian Natural History Museum, in which nature and art, or natura and culture, intertwine, touch and complement each other in a special way.

Corals, although very tiny, are the builders of the largest structures in the living world – coral reefs, which also have a special place in the exhibition.

The aim of the exhibition is to present the natural history characteristics of corals, taking into account their structure, way of life, systematics, distribution and endangered status, while also adding numerous curiosities, legends, myths, beliefs and the artistic experience of corals.

In order to present the beauty, importance and value of corals as comprehensively as possible, the exhibition also includes objects from other museum institutions, showing the presence of corals in different segments of life from almost the very beginnings of civilization to the present day.

Mosquitoes – the Deadliest Animals on Earth

Mosquitoes cause more deaths than any other animal on Earth. They transmit pathogens of various diseases such as malaria, dengue, West Nile fever and many other diseases.

Around half of the world’s population is constantly exposed to a high risk of infection from diseases transmitted by mosquitoes.

More than 3,500 species of mosquitoes in 113 genera have been described so far.

Humans have always tried to control mosquitoes, but to date, no attempt has resulted in lasting success.

The fish Gambusia affinis and Gambusia holbrooki, although effective in mosquito control and widely introduced for that purpose, both negatively affect populations of native fish species as well as communities of zooplankton, insects and crustaceans.

Only female mosquitoes suck blood, which they need for the development of eggs, while males feed on nectar.

Five Impressions – Exhibition of Student Works, XV Gymnasium IB Programme, Zagreb

Nature has always fascinated us. The Croatian Natural History Museum preserves nature, and many find inspiration in its exhibits and diverse natural objects.

By visiting museum displays and exhibitions and participating in museum workshops, five students of the XV Gymnasium IB programme in Zagreb transformed their impressions into interesting works of art.

The diversity of approaches to the observed exhibits created individual creative solutions. A richness of diversity! Both in the museum and in the works of art.

The works created in this way have been integrated among museum exhibits as an exhibition within an exhibition, leaving visitors to reflect on what is nature and what is merely imagination.
