World Sea Turtle Day

Exhibition of works by pupils of class 1.a from Pantovčak Primary School

THOSE DEAR SEA CREATURES

On the occasion of World Sea Turtle Day, 16 – 30 June 2020.

Today, 16 June, is World Sea Turtle Day!

We mark it on this day every year with the aim of raising public awareness of the need to protect these strictly protected species, and also in memory of the birthday of the famous Dr. Archie Carr, the “father of sea turtle biology”, who spent his entire working life researching and saving sea turtles.

Precisely for the purpose of their timely protection in the Mediterranean area, the Croatian Natural History Museum launched the EU project “Collective Actions for Improving the Conservation Status of the EU Sea Turtle Populations – LIFE EUROTURTLES”, the first joint “Mediterranean” project of coordinated turtle conservation activities, involving all key Mediterranean countries of the European Union – Croatia, the project holder, Slovenia, Italy, Malta, Cyprus and Greece.

The project leader is Dr. Draško Holcer, marine biologist and senior curator of the CNHM.

On this occasion, in cooperation with Pantovčak Primary School, teacher Tatjana Pešić Ilijaš and the pupils of class 1.a, an online workshop was organised about sea turtles that inhabit our sea.

The workshop consisted of two parts, a theoretical part and a creative, practical part.

Through a presentation and video material about the life of sea turtles, the pupils also had the opportunity to learn about the main threats that sea turtles face every day, such as entanglement in fishing nets and hooks, as well as waste in the sea and on beaches.

The workshop also connected with the very current topic of plastic waste in the sea, aiming to encourage pupils to use less plastic in everyday life and to take greater care of nature protection.

During the workshop, pupils also learned how to draw sea turtles, and the result is these very interesting drawings.

The pupils grew very fond of “those good sea creatures” and eagerly began drawing them, and we present their artworks in a virtual museum exhibition named after the phrase they so often used: “Those Good Sea Creatures”.

The participating pupils of class 1.a from Pantovčak Primary School were:
