Poaching is not a hobby – the story of quail survival

11 September 2025
Multimedia Hall, Croatian Natural History Museum
Branimir Ivić; Dominik Spevec

📅 Date and time: 11 September 2025 at 6:00 p.m.

📍 Location: Croatian Natural History Museum, Demetrova 1, Zagreb

The Croatian Natural History Museum invites you to a lecture by Dominik Spevec (BIOM Association) on one of the greatest threats to wild birds in Croatia – the poaching of quails. Discover what the fight against illegal hunting looks like, what the latest legislative changes are, and how citizens can help protect nature. 🐦🌍

What to expect:
🔹 An engaging educational talk on quail poaching, including the use of illegal electronic calling devices and why this threatens the species’ survival.
🔹 Legal framework and sanctions: how, through direct pressure from experts (for example via BIOM), the hunting season boundaries were shifted—from 1 August to 21 August—achieving concrete progress in quail protection.
🔹 Active role of citizens: how reporting poaching, especially electronic call devices, can contribute to biodiversity conservation.
🔹 Visual presentation: the lecture will be accompanied by photographs, graphics, and videos from fieldwork.
🔹 Discussion and Q&A: an opportunity for interaction and exchange of views with the speakers.

Why this matters:
Illegal killing, particularly using electronic calling devices, kills tens of thousands of quails annually in Croatia alone, with regional numbers reaching up to 160,000 birds. The issue is of national and international importance, as cross-border migration challenges require joint action.

We invite everyone—nature lovers, citizens, educators, students, and the generally curious—to join and learn how their knowledge and engagement can help in the fight against poaching.
