Speleothem (cave formations) collection

The Speleothem Collection comprises a wide variety of cave deposits, including calcite, aragonite, hyalite, gypsum, and other types of speleothems, as well as crystals, concretions, and other cave precipitates from caves, pits, and caverns of the Dinaric Karst and other karst regions around the world.

In addition to the characteristic speleothems of the classical Dinaric karst, the collection includes rare phreatic speleothems that were first described anywhere in the world from the Tounj Quarry Cave in the Gorski Kotar region.

The oldest inventoried specimen dates from 1918, and the collection continues to grow through specimens collected during ongoing speleological and geological investigations of karst areas, as well as through donations.

The collection contains 325 inventoried specimens, a large proportion of which are on display in the museum’s permanent exhibition.
