Conservation and preparation

The Conservation and Preparation Department includes a zoological preparation workshop and is responsible for maintaining the Museum’s Tissue Collection for Genetic Analysis.

For exhibition purposes, the workshop produces high-quality dermoplastic animal mounts using modern taxidermy techniques. These specimens represent a wide range of animal groups and are prepared to meet both scientific and educational standards.

The department also creates exhibition dioramas in which mounted animals are displayed within accurate reconstructions of their natural habitats, providing visitors with a realistic representation of ecosystems and species interactions.

In addition, the department is responsible for the ongoing preventive conservation, maintenance, and, when necessary, restoration of existing specimens and exhibits.

The department provides professional and technical support to other departments within the Museum and, when required, to other natural history museums for which the Croatian Natural History Museum performs its coordinating and advisory role as a central institution in the field.

Professional Processing and Protection of Natural History Collections Material

Preservation and preparation include procedures through which museum collections material is stabilized, documented, and prepared for long-term preservation, research, and public presentation.

Natural history collections material requires careful planning of storage conditions, specimen processing, and systematic documentation. Professional procedures depend on the type of material, the condition of the specimen, and its intended use within collections, research, or exhibition displays.
