About the Exhibition

The exhibition “Oysters of Long-Lost Seas” offers a fascinating
insight into this interesting and unusual group of bivalves.

Visitors have the opportunity to learn first-hand what oysters are, how they lived
in the geological past compared with today, what helps them survive periods of crisis,
and how they contribute to biodiversity.

In addition to their geological and biological features, oysters are also presented
through other aspects, bringing various interesting facts.

Fossil Oysters

An important part of the exhibition consists of Cenozoic fossil oysters from the
holdings of the Croatian Natural History Museum.

In addition to specimens from Croatia, selected samples from comparative collections
from France and Italy are also displayed.

Geological Context

Most of the exhibited specimens belong to the geological epochs of the Eocene
and Miocene, during which average temperatures were higher than today, encouraging
the flourishing of oysters in the seas of that time.
