Abstract

In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glasshouse collection.

Abstract

The Herbarium ZAGR of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb is one of the youngest in Croatia. The international acronym ZAGR was assigned by Index Herbariorum in 2013 when it was founded. Recently, in addition to the wild vascular flora, a collection of cultivated plants has been added to the herbarium material stored in the Herbarium ZAGR. Analysis has shown that 1737 herbarium specimens belong to the collection of cultivated and wild useful plants. There are 499 species and subspecies of useful plants, which are classified in 315 genera and 104 families. In total, the Herbarium ZAGR holds 18 useful species with cultivars. According to their employment, most taxa (326) can be used as medicine, 254 taxa can be used as food (166) or food additives (88), while bee plants include 172 taxa. Abstract

Regulation 1143/2014 on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species creates the framework for the prevention, minimization, and mitigation of the harmful effects of invasive alien species on biodiversity in the European Union. Commission Implementing Regulations 2016/1141 and 2017/1263 delivered the list of invasive alien species of Union concern (“the Union list”). Out of 49 species on the Union list, 17 species are present in Croatia. They include five plants (Plantae), three crustaceans (Crustacea), two freshwater fish (Actinopterygii), one reptile (Reptilia), one bird (Aves), and five mammals (Mammalia). Their systematics and biology, native and introduced range, history of introduction, pathways of introduction to Croatia, impact in the introduced range, including any known impacts in Croatia, are presented. Furthermore, their distribution in Croatia, based on the available data, is shown on the distribution maps.

Abstract

The species Ludwigia peploides – the floating water primrose, one of the species listed as IAS of EU concern (Regulation EU No 1143/2014) has been recorded for the first time in Croatian flora. It was recorded at the end of August 2018 on the Ilova River near the village of Kaniška Iva (Moslavina, Croatia) where it forms dense floating mats. Its presence was observed along a length of the river of about 2 km. With this finding there are now six plant species listed as invasive alien species of Union concern present in Croatia.

Abstract

The box tree moth Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859) is a native species of East Asia and it was accidentally introduced in Europe several years ago, most likely through the trade in live plants. It is spreading rapidly all over Europe, including the Balkans. In this contribution, we report for the first time this invasive alien species from Kosovo. A single specimen was found on August 20, 2017, in Veriq village, Istog Municipality. The specimen was observed on a light source nearby a decor plant, Buxus sempervirens L., that offers favourable conditions for its spread.

Abstract

This paper introduces some important results of botanical research from Cres, Lošinj and Ilovik islands, Croatia. Besides the first records of taxa that have biogeographical importance (Erythronium dens-canis, Crocus vittatus, Anemone ranunculoides, Corydalis cava), the distributions of several rare (e.g. Medicago marina, Potentilla micrantha, Scilla bifolia, Sedum litoreum) and some adventive (e.g. Oxalis pescaprae, Symphyotrichum squamatum) plant species are also given. Presumably the survival of Central European forest elements (with montane characters) on Cres Island is related to the macroclimatic and orographic features, the special microclimate and the ability of karst dolines (in the areas of Prašče brdo and Tamniški dolac) to provide safe haven for relict populations.

Abstract

In research into mosquitoes in the mountain regions of Croatia, a new species of mosquito for Croatian mosquito fauna has been identified. The Culex pipiens complex is represented with four sibling species. Culex torrentium belongs to this complex and morphologically differs from the other species only in the structure of male genitals. The presence of this species is determined based on the male genital structure and confirmed by mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase molecular analysis. Specimens of these species have been found in all three mountain areas covered by this research: Slavonian mountains, Gorski Kotar area and central Velebit Mt. The lowest altitude where we found this species was 159 metres above sea level (m a.s.l.) in Pleternica, and the highest 906 m a.s.l. in Baške Oštarije. At all sites, the species Cx. torrentium was sampled in community with other species, but most frequently together with sibling species of Cx. pipiens (most probably the subspecies Cx. p. pipiens).

Abstract

A new species of the genus Hilara (Diptera: Empididae), Hilara croatica sp. nov., is described from Croatia and illustrated. Distributions of Hilara and Rhamphomyia (Megacyttarus) species in space and across time are briefly discussed.

Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a study on the distribution of butterfly species in the protected area Mirusha Waterfalls in Kosovo, conducted in the period from April to the end of September 2016. No studies on butterfly fauna in this area had been conducted previously. The survey was organized in 13 sites with different types of habitats, mostly dominated by grassland, natural forest and shrubs. During our study 83 species of butterflies were recorded. The highest diversity (Shannon-Wiener diversity index H) was registered at the site Dush i Sverkes which hosted 68 out of 83 recorded species. The highest number of species was Euro-Siberian (ES) followed by EuroOriental (EO), Euro-Meridional (EM) and Holarctic species (Hol). Our results confirm a rich diversity of butterfly fauna influenced by the climate characteristics, geology and plant composition of the studied area. Out of 83 recorded species in our survey, 7 have Near Threatened status in Europe: Carcharodus floccifera (Zeller, 1847); Parnassius mnemosyne (Linnaeus, 1758); Cupido decolorata (Staudinger, 1886); Hipparchia fagi (Scopoli, 1763); Hipparchia statilinus (Hufnagel, 1758); Melitea aurelia (Nickeri, 1850) and Chazara briseis (Linnaeus, 1764).

Abstract

We sampled Trichoptera monthly, from May to November 2013, at nine localities of the Llap River catchment in Kosovo. A total of 651 specimens belonging to 14 families and 37 species were found. There is a clear pattern of seasonality in the abundance and number of species with the highest number of species and specimens collected during the summer period. The genus Ithytrichia, which is according to the current knowledge rather rare in the Balkan Peninsula, is reported from Kosovo for the first time. Two species are first records for the Kosovo caddisfly fauna: Crunoecia irrorata and Ithytrichia lamellaris. Previously, both species had been rarely sampled in South-eastern Europe. Additionally, several other endemic or rare species of the Balkan Peninsula were collected during this investigation: Rhyacophila loxias, Synagapetus iridipennis, Polycentropus excisus, Drusus botosaneanui, Annitella triloba, Odontocerum hellenicum and Adicella balcanica.

Abstract

The wild vascular flora of the area in the northwestern part of Croatia - Hrvatsko zagorje (near the settlements of Cerje Jesenjsko, Šaša, Pašnik, Vrbno and Ježovec, along with the related hamlets) was explored during the vegetation season of 2011. So far, no floristic data have been recorded for this area, planned to be a part of the future Hrvatsko zagorje Regional Park. On the area of about 4 km2, 389 vascular plant species (which belong to 77 families) were noticed. The most abundant families are Fabaceae (9.3%), Poaceae (7.7%), Asteraceae (7.5%), Lamiaceae (6.2%) and Rosaceae (5.1%). The spectrum of life forms indicates the dominance of hemicryptophytes (50.4%), and the most prominent chorological type is Eurasian (55.0%). The share of urbanophobic and invasive taxa as well as the values of indicators of anthropogenic changes in the researched flora indicate that the investigated area shows semi-natural character, with weak to moderate anthropogenic pressure. Although the share of endemic, endangered and protected taxa is low, the diversity of other native plants justifies protection of the researched area at the level of a regional park.

Abstract

In this study, three species of hypogeous fungi are reported in different regions of Anatolian peninsula. Of these, Hydnocystis piligera is presented as the first record of this genus for Turkish mycobiota, while Melanogaster variegatus and Octaviania asterosperma are given as new locality records for Turkey. Macroscopic and microscopic photographs along with description of the newly recorded taxa are presented.
