Abstract

Black flies (Simuliidae) were collected during 2007 and 2008 at three tufa barriers at Plitvice Lakes National Park using pyramid-type emergence traps. In all, nine species were recorded, all belonging to the genus Simulium, and of which Simulium (Eusimulium) angustipes Edwards, 1915; Simulium (Obuchovia) auricoma Meigen, 1818; Simulium (Nevermannia) costatum Friederichs, 1920; Simulium (Simulium) trifasciatum Curtis, 1839; and Simulium (Simulium) variegatum Meigen, 1818 were recorded for the first time in Croatia. The most abundant species was Simulium (Eusimulium) angustipes, followed by Simulium (Nevermannia) costatum.

Abstract

After more than 40 years, the nymphalid butterfly Nymphalis vaualbum was rediscovered in Croatia. A single specimen was found on Mt. Papuk in the spring area of the Dubo~anka stream in July 2004. The habitats on Mt. Papuk are suitable for the species' long term survival; therefore the area was proposed as a NATURA 2000 site for this threatened and protected species. As the species has disappeared from many European countries, this recent record is of great importance and emphasizes the need for further field research efforts to confirm resident populations of the species, its distribution area and population status.

Abstract

Cephalanthera damasonium is a mesophilous orchid species common in continental forests in Croatia. In the Mediterranean region, the species comes almost exclusively in sub-Mediterranean deciduous vegetation. So far only four findings in Eumediterranean evergreen vegetation in Croatia are known (Limski kanal, Rab, Lo{inj, [ibenik), but are mostly characterized by a strong influence of nearby deciduous vegetation and include a small number of specimens. The island of Mljet is the southernmost finding spot of Cephalanthera damasonium in Croatia. In order to explain this unexpected finding, previous findings in Eumediterranean evergreen vegetation and the ecological requirements of the species are discussed.

Abstract

This publication is a contribution to the knowledge of gall wasp fauna of the Republic of Croatia. In all, 17 genera with 87 species were recorded in Croatia, particularly in the north-western part of the republic with Istria peninsula during the period of 1997–2009. Some species are new for the Republic of Croatia. Localities, record date, synonyms and host plants are given for all species. The list is based on material collected solely by the author. An asexual female of the rare species Andricus korlevici is described. The species has been transferred to another genus.

Abstract

In this paper all reference data of faunistic investigations of aphids and their host plants conducted in Croatia since 1927 are presented. The aim of this paper is to provide a complete checklist of aphids, important crop pests, and their host plants in Croatia. During the compilation of the list of host plants and their aphids, all available reference data of faunistic investigations undertaken in Croatia were used. The first data of aphid fauna were published in 1927 (KOVA^EVI], 1927), and since then more than 50 papers have been published in Croatia. On a total of 192 hostplants, a total of 191 aphid species were established. The 192 host plants were placed in 40 orders and 60 families. The aphid species Aphis fabae, Myzus persicae, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Aphis gossypii, Aphis craccivora, Aulacorthum solani, Acyrtosiphum pisum, Megoura viciae, Methopolophium dirhodum, Rhopalosiphum padi and Aphis pomi were recorded on the highest number of hostplants. Aphis fabae was recorded on 60 host plants, Myzus persicae on 42, Macrosiphum euphorbiae on 38, Aphis gossypii on 33, A. craccivora and Aulacorthum solani on 28, Acyrtosiphum pisum on 16, Megoura viciae and Methopolophium dirhodum on 15, Rhopalosiphum padi on 14 and Aphis pomi on 13 host plants in all. These aphid species are also the most important crop pests, causing direct damage by sucking sap from the plants and indirect damage by virus transmission.

Abstract

A review of the malacological literature established the number and type of papers containing data on the terrestrial malacofauna of the Croatian islands Cres, Susak, Dugi otok, Kornat, Bra~, and the archipelagos of Tela{}ica Nature Park and Kornati National Park. The total number of taxa of terrestrial snails and their localities on each analysed island and archipelago was also established. The thoroughness of the investigation of these islands and archipelagos was assessed according to the number of snail taxa and localities listed, and to the representation of small snail species. This allows for an assessment of the knowledge of their malacofauna and the determination of priority islands and archipelagos for future research on terrestrial snails.

Abstract

Acheroniotes golovranicensis sp. nov. from Golovranica pit (Ljubi{nja mountain range, Radovina, SE Bosnia & Herzegovina), the second known species of the genus, is described, illustrated and compared with the congeneric species Acheroniotes mlejneki Lohaj & Lakota, 2010. This new species is characterised by the different shape of pronotum, wider head and by the shape of the apical part of the aedeagus. Data on the distribution and the ecology of this remarkable species are also provided.

Abstract

Two new highly specialised troglobitic beetles from the Velebit massif (Croatia, Dinaric chain) are described from deep caves in the Crnopac massif. Velebitaphaenops (new genus) giganteus Casale & Jal`i}, new species (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Trechini) is markedly characterised by its large size, and the peculiar combination of features in the mouth parts, chaetotaxy, and male genitalia. Its putative position amongst the aphaenopsoid trechine taxa of the Dinaric range is illustrated and discussed. Velebitodromus ozrenlukici Lohaj, Mlejnek & Jal`i}, new species (Coleoptera: Cholevidae: Leptodirini) is close to the type species of the genus, Velebitodromus smidai Casale, Giachino & Jal`i}, 2004, described from Nothern Velebit (Lubenovac). The new species is markedly distinct by its shorter and wider elytra, and other diagnostic features illustrated both in text and in a key for identification. Data on the distributions and habitats of these two new, unexpected and interesting taxa are also provided.

Abstract

Velebit clover, Trifolium velebiticum was described by Degen and till recently, only three localities in Croatia and one locality in Slovenia have been published, suggesting that this endemic plant of western Croatia and southern Slovenia is very rare. Recent, more detailed surveys, showed that the plant is rather abundant in Croatia, and many new localities have been detected. Single localities have been noted in the paper, accompanied by short habitat descriptions. Based on our observations Trifolium velebiticum grows at very different altitudes, in different habitat types, while optimally and the most abundantly on the temporarily flooded grasslands of poljes.

Abstract

The algal and macrophytic occurrence in the pit lakes of the wider area of Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) was investigated in 2008. The purpose of this investigation was to establish the qualitative composition and the relative abundance of the phytobenthos and epiphyton communities and the structure of the aquatic vegetation in the littoral area of the seven pit lakes. The basic physical and chemical parameters were measured and in total 73 algal taxa and 8 macrophytic species were determined. Most of the algal species belonged to Bacillariophyceae. The macrophytic vegetation was differentiated into two types of habitat. Using the statistical method of the numeric classification, a grouping of samples of phytobenthos and epiphyton compared to the habitat type in which samples were taken was established.

Abstract

Zadar, one of the oldest towns in Croatia, is situated in North Dalmatia. A floristic survey performed between 2005 and 2008 included vascular native and non-native taxa with the ability to survive outside crops. A total of 926 vascular plant species and subspecies, from 470 genera and 107 families were recorded. The most common families are Asteraceae s.l. (12.42%), Poaceae (11.02%) and Fabaceae (9.83%), while therophytes (42.98%) are the most abundant life form. The predominant presentation of therophytes with respect to other life forms has been recognized as a feature common to both the Mediterranean climate and urban areas. The prevailing representation of Mediterranean plants in the flora of the city of Zadar (32.83%) demonstrates that this flora is, despite the exposure to durable anthropogenic influence, still developing under the prevailing influence of the Mediterranean climate conditions. A significant number of cultivated and adventitious taxa (19.22%) and widespread taxa (15.55%) in the flora of the city of Zadar is an indicator of human impact. Although the flora of the city of Zadar is an urban flora it comprises of 17 endemic, 27 threatened and 176 protected taxa.

Abstract

The paper presents vegetation research of grey alder stands (Alnus incana /L./ Moench) along the beds of the rivers Kupa, Kupica, ^abranka and Belica in Gorski kotar. The standard Central European phytosociological method was used to record and analyze eight phytosociological relevés from 2010. Research results revealed that it was the association of grey alder with deadnettle, Lamio orvalae- -Alnetum incanae, recently recorded in the west of Slovenia (DAKSKOBLER, 2007, 2010). Growing under similar ecological conditions and containing common diagnostic species as the Slovenian stands, the stands in Gorski kotar are characterized by the abundant presence of Helleborus dumetorum. For this reason, they have been classified as a new geographic variant of the above mentioned association.

Abstract

Floristic research in the area of Slatina and its surroundings was conducted during the period March-October, 2009-2010. The last complete species list dates back to 1957 and refers specifically to the town of Slatina. It provides 398 taxa of which 5 have been given a particular Red List category, but only 1 has been confirmed with the latest research. The new research has revised the old data and expanded the area of investigation to surrounding villages, approximately 60 km2 in total. Many of the previously recorded taxa have not been found, but with the new ones added to the list, the final number was 550 taxa: 524 species and 26 subspecies classified into 334 genera and 94 families. Of the total number of taxa, 12 belong to Pteridophyta and 538 to the Spermatophyta division, with the Asteraceae family the largest. According to the Red Book of Vascular Flora of Croatia and Flora Croatica Database, 25 species have been given a certain IUCN Red List status and numerous taxa are protected by the law (105 protected, 29 strictly protected). Taxa with an IUCN status have been analyzed in detail regarding their sites of occurrence, causes of threat and population density. Some of the notable findings include: Carex riparia Curtis, Cyperus glomeratus L., Hibiscus trionum L., Hottonia palustris L., Pseudolysimachion longifolium (L.) Opiz and several species within the Orchidaceae family.

Abstract

Floristic research of the area along the lower course of the Una River was conducted during spring of 2009. The floristic list obtained contains 252 vascular plant taxa, out of which three are considered to be under threat of extinction (endangered Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soó and vulnerable Carex rostrata Stokes ex With. and Alopecurus rendlei Eig), while three are data deficient (Stellaria palustris Retz., Orchis laxiflora Lam. ssp. elegans (Heuff.) Soó and Bromus commutatus Schrad.). In the investigated area 14 invasive alien species were recorded, which mainly spread because traditional agricultural practices had been abandoned.
